Friends of the Yucca Valley Library Newsletter
April, May, June 2009

Greetings from THE PRESIDENT

Hello All,

Have I said this before, I can't believe how the time flies. It's spring already. But before I say anything else I want to repair something I said in the last newsletter. I mentioned that if you want to know what the Friends of the Yucca Valley Library are up to check out the various media outlets and I failed to mention a long time supporter of the Yucca Valley Friends, Gary Daighneault at Z107.7. I sincerely apologize for this error and wish to thank Gary and his staff for their support and for always announcing the events of the Friends of the Library. We would not be able to get out the important announcements to the community without your devoted support. Please accept my apology and thank you for all that you do to support the Morongo Basin communities.

Thanks to everyone who worked to make the Appraisal Day a success. As you will see in the Newsletter we are gearing up for the April Book Sale and hope to see everyone there.

Have you been in at the Yucca Valley Library lately? Each time I go to the Library I am so impressed with the number of people that are there using the computers, standing at the information desk being helped, the folks that are being tutored. It is just amazing the number of wonderful programs that are offered at our library and those that come out to participate. Drop in and take a look, it will do your heart good to see what happens at our library every day and to see how your efforts as a member of the Friends of Library contribute to our community.

Summer is fast approaching. We are getting ready for the increase in youth activity that summer brings. Also coming is our Adult Summer Reading Program, "The Book Bugs". Why let the kids have all the fun. Adults read, adults get prizes, adults get a party. Plan on joining the group beginning June 29.

We have several programs coming up in May. Saturday, May 2 at 2:00 p.m., Deborah Greene will be having a workshop, Numerology 101. This will be a fun time with hands on exercises. Tuesday, May 12 at 6:00, Mari Collier will be reading and signing her book Gather the Children. Her book follows two mutants living in the state of Texas. Intrigued?

Our Adult Book Group meets every 4th Tuesday at 6:15. The selection for April 28 is Lost by Daniel Mendelsohn and for May 26, The Art of Racing in the Rain. Join us for a lively discussion of these fine works.

Yesteryear's Chronicles

San Bernardino County Free Library was formally established July 14, 1913. In January 1914 Miss Walters was appointed the first County Librarian. She was the best single source of material concerning the earliest days and development of the library, especially on the great distances involved. To make a trip to Lanfair in the High Desert, you would have to take the 3:45 a.m. train from Ludlow. To serve some of the southern portions of Inyo County, the trip was 40 miles long and was made by handcar!

Many dedicated volunteers made life brighter during the hard times by developing libraries no matter how small. In 1914 the Yucaipa library was housed in the Yucaipa Inn and maintained by the Woman's Club. Libraries for Rancho Cucamonga and Rialto were provided by the Women's Clubs of those towns. Lucerne Valley's library was in the front room of the Box Ranch house, Victorville's was in the local drugstore, Barstow's was in a home-made store room, Bloomington's was in a small room of the Citizens Land & Water Company building, Highland's was in the post office, Trona's was in a school house, and Big Bear's was in the home of a volunteer librarian. By June 1931, our whole county was part of the County Free Library Service. The San Bernardino County Library celebrated its 75th anniversary in 1998. Even before the County Free Library was established, San Bernardino, Redlands, Colton, Ontario and Upland had official city libraries.

The development of libraries throughout the county was the result of the determination and hard work of volunteers and we are an essential part of the library system.

Friends of the Yucca Valley Library Newsletter
January, February, March 2009

Greetings from THE PRESIDENT

Hello and happy New Year. What a beautiful ending to 2008, I thought the snow was a wonderful treat. It's very seldom we see that much snow in the desert.

And now for 2009, unfortunately we are starting the year off with challenges to the Library budget as everyone else in the state is experiencing. I know that the Friends of the Yucca Valley Library will be doing what they have done for the past 41 years, supporting the Library. The members of the Friends of the Yucca Valley Library are a dedicated group of people who know the importance of having a library in our community and will continue to do their good work to ensure that we have new books in the library and other items that are so important.

We are starting the year off with a celebration of the 41 years that the Friends of the Yucca Valley Library have been in existence. The event will be held at the Library on January 29, 5:00 to 7:00 pm. I hope you can come out and spend some time with us.

The Annual Antique Appraisal Event will be held on Saturday, March 7, and there will be more interesting events through the year. Keep an eye out for announcements in the newspaper, the newsletter and flyers throughout town. You don't want to miss anything.

As I end this I want to send a big thank you out to William Boyer who keeps our newsletter going out to us all. Thank you William!

News from THE BRANCH MANAGER

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. I enjoyed the holidays plus a nice vacation visiting friends and family. Things are again picking up at the library after our snowy days. Our 41st Anniversary Celebration of The Friends of Yucca Valley Library is to be held at the library on Thursday, January 29. I will see you there!

The New Year brings us more lively discussions at our adult books group. The group meets every fourth Tuesday at 6:15 in the meeting room. For a list of the upcoming selections for the year, please ask for a bookmark at the reference desk.

Saturday, February 14 is Valentine's Day. At 1:00, the library will be welcoming author Robin Maxwell whose new book, Signore Da Vinci, has just been released. Meticulously researched, this love story promises to be Maxwell's best work to date. Please join us as Ms. Maxwell reads excerpts from her new novel. Copies of Signore Da Vinci as well as other works by the author will be available for purchase and signing. Creative refreshments will be provided by the Friends of Yucca Valley Library.

Our Great and Popular Authors group continues to meet every Wednesday at 3:30. All readers are invited to enjoy listening to the works of great and popular authors. For a list of monthly selections, pick up a calendar of events at the reference desk.

Thank you for all the support we have received from our Friends. The community has been most generous in donating good quality books, giving monetary support and participating in our monthly silent auction.

News from the YOUTH SPECIALIST

Happy New Year and Happy Anniversary to the Friends of the Yucca Valley Library! Now that the New Year is upon us, we have a lot to be thankful for and look forward to another productive year. We have many exciting children's and young adult programs planned. In addition to our standard programs such as Preschool Storytime, Early Learning Programs and the monthly Teen Book Club, we will offer several programs for all ages.

February will be a busy month for making valentines, a Mardi Gras party and a "Twilight" gathering (taken from the book by Stephenie Meyer) for young adults. The first week in March, we plan a weeklong celebration in recognition of Dr. Seuss' Birthday and Read Across America. In April, as usual, we will have a collaborative Earth Day Awareness Program with the Hi Desert Nature Museum, on Saturday the 18th.

Again, thanks to the Friends for all their support. We couldn't have such quality programs without your assistance!

Editor's note: With this issue of the Newsletter we are introducing a new column titled Yesteryear's Chronicles written by our historian, Merilee Thorson. She has done a lot of research and we're sure you will enjoy the result.

Yesteryear's Chronicles

Historical tidbits started when the first San Bernardino County Branch Library of Morongo Basin became a reality in July 1934 located at the Morongo Valley Grocery Store and the Yucca Valley Inn. There was great interest in having a library, however the store and inn were closed because of war time problems and gas rationing. Fortunately in October 1945 Mrs. Mable Becker became the librarian and re-opened the branch in Becker's Variety Store in Joshua Tree. In l946 Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Becker moved their variety store and the branch library to Yucca Valley, two doors west of the Rexall Drug Store which is now the "Water Canyon". There were two shelves of books and when all her steady customers and townspeople had read all the books, she would contact the San Bernardino County Library who brought new books and took the old books away.

Becker's Variety Store and the Branch Library
were moved to this location in Yucca Valley in 1946.

By 1955 the library collection had grown to 497 books with 363 registered borrowers and an annual circulation of 7,636. Mrs. Becker truly served all of the community and continued until 1958. The branch librarythen moved into a small building in Hi-Desert Park by Yucca Valley Elementary School. Within one year the collection grew to 1,889.

Thanks to the Yucca Valley Park & Recreation District the library was moved to a new 8000 square foot building leased to the County Library. Now there were 4,425 books for 1,162 patrons and an annual circulation of 20,197. In 1968 the Friends of the Yucca Valley Library Chapter was created.

Watch for more historical tidbits in future Newsletters.

October, November, December 2008

Greetings from THE PRESIDENT

We all got through another summer in the desert and it is fall at last; which of course means Fall Book Sale to all Friends of the Library. The book sale was a great success! A big thank you goes out to Carol Hertel, Ibby Burgin and Kathy Nadvornick for coordinating the book sale and to everyone who participated in making the book sale the success it was. We will be needing book donations for the Spring sale so as you get ready to discard those books think of the library.

Friends of the Yucca Valley Library now has a web site at
http://www.yuccavalleyfol.org
Check us out.

Beverly Ary, President of the Friends of the Yucca Valley Library
bevary@yahoo.com

News from THE BRANCH MANAGER

The big news is the addition of two study rooms and new east and west entrance doors. No more heavy hard-to-open doors. Just push the button marked "handicapped" and the doors open automatically. We also have an addition on the west side of the library that will be used for much needed storage space for the Friends of the Yucca Valley Library. We are really pleased and excited about these changes.

Programs, programs, programs. We had many quality programs in September with excellent attendance. In October, our "Great and Popular Authors" reading program continues every Wednesday at 3:30. Join in the listening fun and be glad you did.

Saturday, Oct. 18 at 2:00 our Early Learning Program hosted an educational program for adults and children over 7 years. Learning good nutrition was the focus of the day as Lanelle Gradilla presented: Healthy Happy Kids.

Thursday, October 23 at 6:00 p.m. plan to spend the evening with Edgar Allan Poe. In the Shadow of the Raven is a one man play by professional actor Duffy Hanson who, as Poe, rises from the dead to solve the mystery of his own murder. Free to all adults and high school students.

On Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 6:15 our adult book discussion group meets. This month's selection is Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen.

Saturday, November 8 between 3-4 join us as we enjoy a Winter Craft Day. We'll make something fun.

When the sun sets and you begin to feel a chill in the air, be sure you have a stack of good books to keep you cozy and warm. Your library card is the biggest bargain in town.

News from the YOUTH SPECIALIST

We're off to a great Fall! Preschool Storytime began in September. This year's theme again is "Travel through the Alphabet." Children are invited to bring items from home that begin with the letter of that week. It's fun (and funny) to see what they share. We are averaging about 25 participants.

We also have many fun activities planned! The week of October 12, 2008, was Teen Read Week. This is an annual event when young adults are encouraged to read for the fun of it. This year's theme was "Books that Bite!" which goes well with the popular selection of vampire books by this particular age group. Teens and tweens that check out books during this week will receive their very own set of vampire teeth as well as an opportunity to win a $50 gift certificate to WAL-MART. See the pictures below taken by Thyra Nagy.

Also in October, Franklin Haynes and his Marionettes will make their appearance on October 25th at 4 pm. They will perform a "Hilarious Halloween Haunt."

November 8th at 3 pm we will offer a Winter Craft event and in December a "Holiday Crafts from Around the World" will take place on the 13th. As usual, these programs are free and sponsored by the Yucca Valley Friends of the Library. Thank you very much!

Friends of the Yucca Valley Library Newsletter
July, August, September 2008

Greetings from THE PRESIDENT

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the members of the Friends of the Library. I have lived in Yucca Valley since 1991 and have worked at Morongo Basin Mental Health since moving here. I grew up in Victorville so I am a Hi-Desert native. I have truly enjoyed living in the Morongo Basin, it is such a beautiful area. I have a grown son and daughter in law that live in the area, three grandchildren and I also have a great niece who lives with me. My family have all made the library their home, the children have participated in the summer reading programs for many years. I am delighted to have an opportunity to give back to the library community in the way of being president for the coming year. I hope that all members that can will come to the board meeting and I will have the opportunity to meet with you. If you have any suggestions I would be pleased to hear from you. I look forward to a wonderful and productive year for the library. Take care and I hope to see you at the next Board meeting.

Best regards,

News from THE BRANCH MANAGER

The news from the library is that summer is here! We live in the desert and it is hot but the library is a "cool" place to be so come on down. We are busy, busy, busy with the summer reading program but you will still receive excellent customer service as always.

The Adult Summer Reading Program is in full swing with approximately 35 adult readers signed up. The Book Bugs are reading and getting tickets for chances to receive prizes at the end of the program. It is fun. The group will be enjoying a luncheon and sharing their favorite summer book on August 29, 2008, at noon.

The adult book discussion group will be meeting throughout the summer. The next meeting is July 22 at 6:15. We will be discussing The Grandmothers by award winning author Doris Lessing. Join us for a stimulating discussion.

We are happy to report that 480 volunteer hours were donated to the library in June, 2008. Our staff is busy. Thyra, our Early Learning Program specialist, welcomed 310 adults and children to her programs in June. Debbie, our youth services librarian, reported an attendance of 890 children and teens at her programs in June. Wow! The staff is busy but keeping cool.

News from the YOUTH SPECIALIST

Dear Friends,
The Summer Reading Program is going fast and furious. At this time, we have over 400 registered participants. Sixty-one are preschoolers, 230 are elementary school-aged children and 110 have signed up as young adults. We have had all kinds of exciting programs, including a comedian who balances a wheel barrel on his chin, Dr. Sue with her traveling insect zoo, and Cruiser and Surfer the therapy dogs that love to have children read to them. We have had a fantastic response from local merchants who have donated incentives to encourage children to continue reading throughout the summer months. Some of those sponsors include WAL-MART, Del Taco, Carrow's, Sizzler's, Queen's Nails, Yucca Bowl, Palm Springs Air Museum, the Children's Museum of the Desert and of course the Friends of the Yucca Valley Library! We also have many programs in which locals have donated their time and energy to entertain the youth, such as the Joshua Tree National Park, Steve Fuji and his "Making a Scene" actors/actresses, Kindermusik, Truth in Action, Fit 4 a Lady and many other patrons who have shared their special skills with children. The performance part of the Summer Reading Program continues through the first week in August, however the Reading for Rewards portion continues through the month of August. This is a very exciting and rewarding time for the Library! Thank you again for all your support!

One highlight of this event is a book sale, held in front of the San Bernardino Library at 104 W. 4th St., featuring books, manuals, or materials relating to cars, motorcycles, or things that GO. If you have such materials that you would like to donate, please bring them to the Yucca Valley Library as soon as possible so Lynda can process them for the event.

Friends of the Yucca Valley Library Newsletter
January, February, March 2008

Greetings from THE PRESIDENT

Hello Friends and welcome to 2008. Mark your calendar for our Antique Appraisal Day on March 8th at 9 a.m. This is a fun event with appraisers coming into the library to evaluate the articles brought in from the surrounding community.

Two years ago, one of the articles brought in was a quilt which the appraiser thought might have been made from the ball gowns of Louise May Alcott, based on the information the owner possessed. We enjoyed that. People relax and exchange information with each other while waiting for their appraisal. These people then share the comments and the evaluations of the appraisers. The price for this event is a $5.00 donation per item to the Friends of the Library. Bring in those items you would like to have appraised. And ask your neighbors to join you also if they have items they would like to have appraised. It’s a mini Antique Road Show.

Our Spring Book Sale will be in April. There will be a Thursday evening sale on April 17th 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. and a Friday morning sale 9 to 10 a.m. which is open only to the Friends of the Library. The sale will then be open to the public on Friday the l8th, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday the 19th 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., (The Yucca Valley Museum is sponsoring Earth Day also on the 19th.) Monday the 21st, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and then a "Buck-a-Bag" wrap up on Tuesday, noon to 4 p.m.

In the past, the early admission time for the Friends of the Library was included in the public announcement and some non-members invariably showed up at the early time. Turning them away resulted in frustration and sometimes anger. From now on, the public announcement will only include times when the sale is open to the general public. So this Newsletter announcement will be your only notice of the early admission available to you.

2007 was a good year for us due to your generosity and support. Thanks very much!!

Kate Bariteau, President of the Friends of the Yucca Valley Library.

The entire staff hopes that your Holidays were enjoyable. Be sure to make one of your New Years resolutions to use the library services more in the year 2008.

Thank you to the Friends for providing funds to purchase 12 new oak chairs. We now have matching chairs in the youth section and also four new ones in the adult section. The Friends continue to purchase the latest DVD's, and books on CD. The library patrons are very grateful.

Our adult book discussion group is growing every month with Paula Durrant as facilitator. They will be meeting Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 6:15 p.m. The selection this month is Three Junes by Julia Glass. Come join the stimulating discussions every fourth Tuesday of the month.

On Thursday, January 24, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. the Braille Mobile Solutions Van will be in the library parking lot providing testing, demonstrations and literature. There will also be a short program in the library on macular degeneration.

The Elsinore Machris Gilliland Fund of the Hi Desert Memorial Hospital, Inc. continues to provide the library with quality Large Print books. Our large print book circulation is the 2nd highest in the county libraries.

On Thursday, February 21 at 6:00 p.m., Alexa Cosner, financial advisor for Edward Jones will be here at the library presenting a program titled, "Building a Strong Financial Foundation." This free program will give an overview of investments and address many of the questions potential investors ask. If there is sufficient interest, Ms. Cosner will continue with a 5 week seminar sponsored by the Friends of the Yucca Valley Library.

Thank you to Olivia de Haulleville for the donation of a lovely print of "Winter Quarters at Valley Forge." It is hanging on the north wall of the library and will eventually be moved to one of the new study rooms.

October, November, December 2007

Greetings from THE PRESIDENT

I look forward eagerly to another good year for the Friends of the Yucca Valley Library. We are anticipating the Fall Book Sale and are working hard preparing for its success. This is a major fund raiser. Be sure to check the hours set aside just for the members. This information is included elsewhere in this Newsletter.

Since the government has cut the library's funding, we need your help finding a new fund raiser. If you've been to an event that was fun or stimulating or hugely profitable or all the above, give us a call. We'd love to hear from you. Thanks for your input.

News from THE BRANCH MANAGER

Debbie, Thyra and I were recent participants in the Route 66 event in San Bernardino that raised money for the county libraries. The library earned money by selling Johnsonville Brats and by having an antique car book sale. Our library will receive a percentage of the income from the Brats sold and of the income from the sale of the books our library donated to the book sale. It was a fun thing to be involved in such a huge undertaking. Preparations are already under way for the '08 Brats for Books event.

The Town of Yucca Valley is working closely with an architectural firm to finalize the plans for the enclosure of three of the existing library patios plus enclosing a space on the west side of the building to be used by the Friends of the Library for storage. Also, improvements to the outside doors and restroom doors will make usage for the handicapped much easier. This is exciting progress toward a library mini-face lift.

Adult programs are in full swing. Beginning October 3 at 3:30, the Listening to Popular and Great Authors sessions will resume. Kathleen McGlynn will begin by reading from stories by author Stephen Crane.

Our thought provoking and lively adult book discussion group meets every 4th Tuesday at 6:15 in the meeting room. Discussion titles for each month are available in large print and audio as well as standard book form. Checkout the display of monthly titles at the reference desk.

On Thursday evening, November 1 at 6:00 p.m. the library will present Illusions by Allen, a magic show of extraordinary proportions. Please join us and bring your guests. Lots of Wow!

Circulation is up. We are busy. We are grateful to the Friends of the Library for their hard work. The staff of Yucca Valley Branch Library says “Thank you, Friends”.

News from the YOUTH SPECIALIST

Dear Friends,
What a great start to a new school year! September was "Library Card Sign-up Month". We already have 59 new applicants, 20 of which are juveniles! There will be a drawing at the end of the month and all new applicants will have a chance at winning a prize.

Also, Preschool Storytime has started anew. This year's theme is "Travel through the Alphabet". Children will have the opportunity to share items from home that begin with the letter of that week. It's fun to see the confidence built over the course of the year, for those children who choose to share. We are averaging 40 parents, grandparents, caregivers and children a session.

Also, the Teen Book Club met to see if any reorganizing needed to take place. The Teens agreed that the third Thursday of each month, at 4 p.m. was still the best time to meet. Nine teens attended the reorganization meeting, with five of them being new.

Our big Book Club kick-off for the year was on September 27th at 4 p.m.

Upcoming events include Teen Read Week Oct. 14-20th, Fall Festival Oct 30th at 4:30pm, and Children's Book Week Nov. 12-18th . We will be collaborating with the Hi-Desert Star again during that week to do a Pirate event. In Dec. we will collaborate with Steve Fuji and his acting company to present a Christmas play at the Library.

News from THE BRANCH MANAGER

Summer is upon us and we are busier than ever. Lots of youth are coming to the library for the Summer Reading Program, but there is also an increase in adult usage of library facilities. As the town grows, so does the library circulation and patronage. Our fine staff is well trained to make all aspects of the librarv experience a positive one for all ages.

The Yucca Valley Library Holdings at the end of the fiscal year 2006 are 44,478 items. This year has seen an increase in circulation of DVD's, educational VHS videos, paperback books and of course, books. Plans are going forward to enclose three of the existing patios to create quiet study rooms. Also, it is planned to enclose a section on the west side of the library to be used for storage and a work area for the Friends of the Library.

This summer we decided that we weren't going to let the kids have all the fun and The Adult Summer Reading Program wos created. So far, 60 adults have signed up to participate It is very much like the youth program. You earn tickets for books read and at the end of the summer we will draw for great and wonderful prizes. Fun games accompany this fun program.

We are planning several adult programs for the fall months, including an evening of magic with Allen Oshiro.

The Adult Discussion Group is alive and well and meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 6:15 p.m. On July 24, 2007 the group will be discussing the book, Eat, Play, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. The August selection is The God of Small Things by Arunghati, and the September selection is The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.

Stay cool and be sure to visit us often.
